2,800 participants raised up to HK$4.1 million to support MSF

MSF Orienteering Competition 2012 is successfully held today in Tai Lam Country Park, Tuen Mun. Number of participants has reached record high of near 2,800 people, including 58 teams from governmental departments and public organisations as well as 118 families. Amongst the participants, the youngest is only 1 year ago while the eldest aged 67. They help raise near HK$4.1 million to support MSF’s worldwide medical humanitarian work.

The officiating guest, Secretary for Justice Mr WONG Yan Lung stresses the importance of frontline humanitarian service by mentioning today as the first anniversary of the Japan earthquake. He also said, “MSF frontline work may be sometime dangerous, and some sacrifice may have to be made. But the field workers bring hope to people in need via medical services, and I would like to pay tribute to them.” He also encourages participants to be not only joining the competition but also become dedicated MSF supporters.

President of MSF Hong Kong Dr FAN Ning states that MSF provides humanitarian assistance to those in needs regardless of their race, religion, creed or political convictions. However, humanitarian work is facing great challenge. Last year, two MSF fieldworkers were killed in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, while another two were abducted while working for the Dadaab refugee camp in Kenya and have not yet been released. Dr Fan pays high tribute to them, and would like the society to have a deeper understanding on the difficulties of humanitarian assistance work.

Secretary for Justice Mr WONG Yan Lung, SC, JP, accompanied by President of Orienteering Association of Hong Kong Mr Dominic YUE, President of MSF Hong Kong Dr FAN Ning as well as Executive Director Mr Remi CARRIER, officiate the Kick-off Ceremony.
