After a 7-hour flight, I landed in Port Moresby yesterday. I was picked up by a driver and taken to the MSF office where I received a briefing from MSF Head of Mission in Papua New Guinea (PNG); and also got to meet with the rest of the mission coordination team.

It’s the second day back to work after the New Year break and 2012 is definitely off to a busy start! Amidst the hustle and bustle of day-to-day tasks is the excitement I am feeling and the preparations I am making for my upcoming field visit to the MSF projects in Papua New Guinea (PNG).

The 2010 FIFA World Cup is in its final stage and the excitement in Southern Africa is still palpable even in Zimbabwe where I work as a nurse for Médecins Sans Frontières in an HIV/AIDS treatment project, north of host nation South Africa.

It’s difficult to go anywhere in South Africa without getting caught up in football fever these days. The 2010 FIFA World Cup is entering the quarterfinal stage this week and I have to admit that the football bug has bitten me in a big way – even though I was never a football fan before.

The all-star Brazil football squad entered the 2010 FIFA World Cup as early favourites to make it to the finals and hope to lift the golden trophy. And similarly in Médecins Sans Frontieres(MSF) upcoming HALFTIME!

In Maputo, Mozambique’s capital, a field of 20 agile aspiring footballers from HIV programmes run by MSF did their best in recent weeks to impress selectors and secure their participation in the HALFTIME! five-a-side tournament in Johannesburg in neighbouring South Africa on July 2.

The Thwala family gathers around the small radio set to listen to the commentary of the 2010 FIFA World Cup tournament match kicks off. The excitement in the little four-roomed house is so huge, neighbours walking past can almost feel it.
