Over 2,000 Participants Raised Over HK$ 2million to Support MSF Work

Financial tsunami has not stopped warm-hearted citizens to support medical humanitarian work! MSF Orienteering Competition 2009 is successfully held today at Mui Wo, Lantau Island. There are over 2,000 participants this year, around 300 more than in the competition 2008, and has broken the record of the number of participants over the past four years.

42 teams from corporate sector, government departments and public organisations including AIA Foundation, the 2009 East Asian Games (Hong Kong) Ltd. and the Hong Kong Police competed with other organisations for the Government Department and Public Organisation Trophy and the Corporate Sector Trophy. Among 70 families that join the Family Category, we have the youngest participants of only one year old. Eight VIP teams from the medical and political sectors, together with MSF volunteers join the VIP Race to enhance the spirit of the event. Mr YAU Shing Mu, Under Secretary for Transport and Housing, also compete with others in the VIP race.

Mr YAU Shing Mu has competed in other orienteering competitions before and found it very challenging and interesting. He is also a long-term donor of MSF and this makes the competition today more meaningful. Dr FAN Ning, President of MSF Hong Kong, has to rush for the flight to Jerusalem after the kick-off ceremony of VIP race in order to join the MSF relief work in Gaza. He says that the theme of the competition this year is “Your first step can bring us further!” He takes the meaning of the theme by heart now. Without the support from the public, MSF cannot provide assistance swiftly to the neglected populations all over the world. Hon Jasper TSANG Yok Sing, President of Legislative Council and Mr LEE Chi Kin, President of Orienteering Association and other guests also attend the ceremony.

It is the eighth year that MSF-Hong Kong (MSF-HK) organises the Orienteering Competition and it has been the largest event of its kind in Hong Kong since it was launched in 2002. The theme of this year is “Your first step can bring us further!” It highlights the importance of participation and support from the public to MSF relief work. The support from donors allows us to continue to provide medical assistance in more than 60 countries. The competition also raises awareness among participants about the hardship of the vulnerable populations in getting access to health care in remote areas, and to provide an opportunity for participants to catch a glimpse of the challenges encountered by our field volunteers.

The event is co-presented by Orienteering Association of Hong Kong and supported by AIA Foundation. Special thanks also go to Mui Wo Rural Committee; Prize Sponsors W. L. Gore & Associates (HK) Ltd., Senses Marketing International Limited, The Overlander and Samsonite Asia Limited; Supporting Company Ove Arup & Partners HK Ltd.
