2,400 Participants Raised Around HK$2.2million to Support MSF Relief Work
MSF Orienteering Competition 2010 is successfully held today at Discovery Bay, Lantau Island. There are 2,400 participants this year, and this has broken record for having the most participants since the competition was launched in 2002. Around HK$2.2million is raised to support MSF worldwide medical relief work.
A total of 30 corporates, government departments and public organizations competed for the Government Department and Public Organisation Trophy and the Corporate Sector Trophy. They include AIA, SWISS International Air Lines, the Social Welfare Department, the Hong Kong Fire Services Department and the Hong Kong Police Force. Over 100 families that join the Family Category, we have the youngest participants of only two years old. Seven VIP teams from the medical and political sectors, together with MSF volunteers join the VIP Race to enhance the spirit of the event.
Officiating guest and Convenor of the Non-official Members of the Executive Council Hon LEUNG Chun-ying says it is very meaningful to support the relief work of MSF by participating in the competition. Dr FAN Ning, President of MSF Hong Kong, says that after the disastrous earthquake hit Haiti, millions of people are still in precarious situation and are in need of medical care, shelter, food and water. Thousands of injured people have been treated in MSF temporary medical facilities. More relief materials and relief workers will be sent to the field to reinforce the response capacity. He hopes all the participants can enjoy the competition at the same time experience the challenges MSF field volunteers encounter when they have to walk thousands of miles to provide medical aid. He emphasizes the importance of support from the community that allows MSF to respond quickly to humanitarian crises, not only in Haiti but also in other areas all over the world.
It is the ninth year that MSF-Hong Kong organises the Orienteering Competition. It has been the largest event of its kind in Hong Kong since it was launched in 2002.
