Companies and schools join hands to raise over HK$4.1 million

Today marks “MSF Day 2012”, the annual fundraising event of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). MSF encourages members of the public to support its worldwide humanitarian work by donating a day’s income, as if they are working with its field workers on the frontline. The campaign has raised over HK$4.1 million.

MSF Day 2012 Finale is held today (7 July) at iSQUARE in Tsim Sha Tsui. Ms. Shu Qi, the MSF Day Hononary Campaign Leader, attends the ceremony to show her support to MSF Day. She is impressed by how fieldworkers leave their stable lives and join MSF to provide medical aid on the frontline. Although she is not a medical professional, she is glad to make an effort to help MSF.

Mr. Rémi CARRIER, the Executive Director of MSF-HK, expresses his gratitude to all MSF Day participants as their generosity allows MSF to intervene whenever and wherever a crisis arises and people need help. He also highlights the refugee crisis in South Sudan and how the continuous conflicts in Somalia impact on relief work, and call for support from all sectors to MSF frontline work.

Dr. Chiels LIU, the board member of MSF-HK and also a fieldworker who has worked in Sudan, Sierra Leone, Democratic Republic of Congo and Central African Republic, shares his frontline experience.

In the ceremony, Ms. Shu Qi and other officiating guests stick the slogan “Donating a day’s income” on a calendar to encourage the public to take part in MSF Day.

MSF’s volunteering spirit is well recognised among different sectors of the community. A total of 183 companies and organisations from private sectors and 24 governmental departments support MSF Day. New World Department Store China Limited and its parent company New World Development Company Limited, which has been the Key Sponsor of MSF Day for the sixth year, successfully mobilised their staff to donate a day’s income for the campaign.

MSF Day recruits Student Ambassadors for the third year, and Hello Kitty is invited as the Honorary Student Ambassador. Response from schools is unprecedentedly good with 1,158 students from 68 schools joining the campaign. The top 3 schools which have recruited most “MSF Day Student Ambassadors” are Good Hope School (Primary School), Precious Blood Primary School and Buddhist Chi King Primary School.

Today, all participants wear the “MSF Day badge” and support MSF’s humanitarian work. Supporters can also make one-time donation in all 7-Eleven stores, where they will be given a Hello Kitty badge.
