Hong Kong public echoes by raising HK$3.17 million for global humanitarian work

Today is MSF Day, the annual fundraising event of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). This year the event carries the slogan of “Volunteer your day to the frontline work”. The public can support MSF Day by donating a day’s income as a way to volunteer for MSF and work with our field workers on that day. The campaign has raised over HK$3.17 million.

MSF Day Finale 2013 is held today at K11 Piazza at Tsim Sha Tsui, with the famous artiste Ms. Vivian CHOW being the Principal Guest of the Finale. She highlights her support to MSF and shares her views about humanitarian work with MSF field worker Vincent PAU, who joined MSF last year and was sent to South Sudan for a 6-month mission.

Vivian revealed how she got to know about Vincent, as she heard through a friend that Vincent was a fan of hers. She then read through Vincent’s posts on MSF blog and got to know more about his work. She was particularly touched when she read Vincent’s letter to her mother on the blog. Vivian then got in touch on Facebook to send him encouragement about his work.

Vivian says that actually MSF is the first organisation that she donates to as a donor. She has been admiring MSF’s work for long. She pays her tribute to all field workers who give up their stable career and go to the frontline to provide assistance. Vivian adds that though not everyone is able to work in the field, but everyone can join the efforts by donating a day’s income to MSF.

MSF Day 2013 Honorary Campaign Leader Mr. Eason CHAN has had to devote himself to the preparation of his concert, but he spared time to take part in the shooting of the MSF Day advertisements. In a video played today in the Finale, he expresses his heartfelt gratitude to all individuals and companies for echoing the slogan and donating their income, and he believes their support will be highly appreciated by all the MSF field workers who are working on the frontline in over 60 countries.

Mr. Rémi CARRIER, Executive Director of MSF-Hong Kong, also thanks all the participants for allowing MSF to provide independent, neutral and impartial assistance to all those in need. He highlights the conflicts in Syria and Myanmar and their impact on people’s access to medical assistance, and calls for the public’s concern on global humanitarian crises.

In the ceremony, Vivian and other officiating guests put all the essential equipments into an emergency kit to signify that every public member can join MSF’s work on the frontline.

This year, a total of 98 companies and organisations from private and public sectors, and 11 governmental departments support MSF Day. The New World Department Stores China Ltd, which has been the Key Sponsor of MSF Day for the seventh year, successfully mobilised their staff to donate a day’s income for the Campaign.

Today, all participants wear the “MSF Day badge” and support MSF’s humanitarian work. From today until 11 July, supporters can make one-time donation in all 7-Eleven stores, where they will be given the MSF Day badge.

Special thanks to the Key Sponsor New World Department Stores China Ltd; Medical Action Partner Rayform Ltd; Field Supporters LeSportsac (Carsac Ltd) and New Plaza Garment Factory Co Ltd.
