Generates around HK$ 7 million for global humanitarian work

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) Hong Kong successfully held today the MSF Day 2019 Finale at E-Max in Kowloon Bay, raising around HK$ 7 million for medical humanitarian assistance in over 70 countries around the world.

With the theme, “Each of us comes from different walks of life, but we can all help save lives”, the event was led by singer Hins Cheung, this year’s honorary campaign leader. Cheung appealed to the public to donate at least one-day’s income and wear the 7.7 MSF Day bracelet as a show of support to MSF’s mission of saving lives.

Cheung, a monthly MSF donor for five years, said that he has been supporting MSF because he knows that his donations will provide medicines or medical facilities for patients who are most in need. MSF provides emergency medical aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, pandemics, natural disasters and exclusion from health care.

Cheung said he decided this year to become the Honorary Campaign Leader of MSF Day 2019 in the hope of encouraging more people to support MSF and save more lives. “We can all do our part just by donating at least one-day’s income to the cause of MSF,” he said.

During the event, MSF Hong Kong Executive Director Sam Taylor expressed his thanks to the Hong Kong public for its continuous and generous support in a span of 25 years.

“This year marks MSF Hong Kong’s 25th year. Through the years, the Hong Kong public has been instrumental in ensuring MSF’s financial independence, which is crucial in our provision of needs-based assistance, in accordance with the principles of neutrality and impartiality. The support of the Hong Kong public has allowed us to be flexible in the allocation of resources, especially during emergencies. For this we are truly grateful,” Taylor said.

During the event, Cheung, joined by Taylor and MSF field workers from Hong Kong – Angel Ho, Susan Lam and Dr Wilson Li – in twisting the fist-like devices with MSF Day bracelets to reveal the amount of funds raised this year. The action signified the unity of people from all walks of life in helping save lives.

The program ended with a note of thanks to the 87 private organisations, 13 public sector and government departments, and more than 5,800 individuals who supported MSF Day 2019.  Members of public can still continue to donate their one-day income through the official website of MSF Day (msf.hk/msfday). All supporters of MSF Day 2019 will receive a bracelet in recognition of their volunteering spirit.
