Urgently safeguard people’s access to healthcare, healthcare workers and medical supplies as social unrest deepens in South Africa
7-16 | In the South African provinces of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), social unrest, including widespread looting, has led to the disruption of crucial healthcare services and access to food and other essentials. To date, 72 people are reported killed in the violence with hundreds more sustaining injuries, including lacerations, gunshot and burn wounds.
7-16 | On 9 July 2021, the Republic of South Sudan marked its tenth birthday. This significant milestone is also marred by the bloody legacy of its first decade, including a five-year civil war. At this very moment, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) released a new report titled South Sudan at 10: an MSF record of the consequences of violence to give a consolidated account of MSF’s experience in South Sudan since 9 July 2011.
6-29 | Over one month since a ceasefire came into force between the Israeli government and Hamas, Palestinians in the Gaza Strip feel unsafe and fear another round of hostilities. Twelve-year-old Mohanned was in the car with his aunt on 11 May when an airstrike hit the neighbourhood they were driving through. Mohanned survived the blast but sustained multiple injuries to his head, arm and abdomen from the shrapnel. “Look at him,” says his father, Elsabea Musabeh, lifting his son’s T-shirt to show wide layers of gauze dressing wrapped around Mohanned’s waist.
6-22 | While thousands of people struggle to access vital healthcare in the restive North-West region of Cameroon, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has been denied the resumption of our healthcare services in the region, six months after a forced suspension by Cameroonian authorities. MSF calls on the government of Cameroon to immediately lift this suspension and prioritise the medical needs of people.
DRC - Boga attack: General hospital looted and burnt down, with grave consequences for local communities
6-9 | On Monday 7 June 2021, the city of Boga’s General Referral Hospital (GRH), which is supported by Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF), has been the target of a deliberate attack in the context of ongoing clashes in the city. The overall toll of the clashes so far is estimated at around twelve deaths, including ten civilians, and the hospital has been completely destroyed. Several buildings were burnt down, including the intensive care unit, and the pharmacy and medical reserves were looted.
