1-24 | In the State of Jonglei in South Sudan, civilians continue to bear the brunt of inter-communal fighting. Wounded patients are still arriving at the Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) hospital in Pibor, three weeks after the violent attack on the town and outlying villages in Pibor County. Many were injured in the bush, where thousands have remained, afraid to come out of hiding. MSF medical teams are now treating serious wound infections, some several weeks old.
9-20 | Up to sixteen civilians have been killed during an attack on Zriglo, a village in Southwest Ivory Coast just south of the town of Taï, late last week. Up to 50 houses have been burned and most of the population fled into the forests.
9-2 | The international medical-humanitarian organisation Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is assisting wounded patients in the town of Galcaayo in the Mudug Region of Somalia. Heavy fighting broke out on Thursday (1/9/11) in the town, leading to many casualties including among civilians. The hospital in Galcaayo North, partly supported by MSF, has treated 60 wounded, most of them civilians, while 20 wounded have been treated so far at an MSF-run hospital in the southern part of the city. Until now, the fighting is reported to have claimed 18 lives.
12-24 | The people of Southern Sudan are trapped in a worsening crisis, following the most violent year since the 2005 peace agreement that ended more than two decades of civil war with the North. However, the response to the escalating emergency is inadequate, says international medical relief organisation, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF).
12-10 | In Malakand district, in Pakistan's North West Frontier Province, the local population has been affected by conflict between the Pakistani army and armed opposition groups. Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), one of the only international organisations present in this region, has supported a sub-district hospital in Dargai, since 2006. An MSF medical team (comprising doctors and a surgeon, anaesthetist, nurse and gynaecologist) works with Ministry of Health staff in the hospital's emergency room, operating theatre and inpatient department.
