6-20 | A measles epidemic is sweeping through districts of northern Syria, with up to 7,000 known cases, an indication that humanitarian needs are increasing and the country’s healthcare system is in a state of collapse after more than two years of civil war. Teams from MSF have vaccinated more than 75,000 children in the provinces of Aleppo, Ar-Raqqah and Idlib in an effort to stem the epidemic amongst a population previously unused to outbreaks of this kind.

6-7 | On June 7th, the United Nations convenes in Geneva for a joint launch of the Syria humanitarian assistance plan for 2013. Dr Mego TERZIAN, President of MSF delivered a speech and relay our call to the UN and to all relevant States asking for an urgent increase of the level of assistance for the Syrian population, and to fulfil their responsibilities towards the millions of victims.

After more than two years of raging conflict in Syria, humanitarian assistance inside the country and in neighbouring states hosting Syrian refugees remains far below massive and growing needs. As the United Nations convenes in Geneva on June 7, Médecins Sans Frontières calls upon it and all relevant States to urgently increase the level of assistance to the Syrian population, and to fulfil their responsibilities towards the millions of victims of violence.

Following the attack on an office of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Jalalabad, eastern Afghanistan, the international medical humanitarian association Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) strongly condemns violence against humanitarian workers and facilities.
“MSF calls on all parties to the conflict in Afghanistan to respect humanitarian workers as well as medical facilities, which must remain safe and neutral,” says Brice de le VINGNE, MSF’s Director of Operations.
