1-19 | San Lazaro Hospital (SLH) is a Special National Hospital Medical Centre for Infectious Diseases in Manila, Philippines. It is where the first case of COVID-19 in the country was confirmed and treated.MSF boosted SLH’s COVID-19 testing, data management, and COVID-19 case management through the support of additional healthcare workers, biomedical equipment, medicines, medical supplies, personal protective equipment, training for infection prevention and control, and some infrastructure improvements.

Goni, or Rolly as it’s known in the Philippines, caused widespread damage throughout the Bicol region, particularly Catanduanes and Albay provinces, around 300 km south-east of Manila. Just before it made landfall, Goni was rated as a category 5 typhoon, the most severe level.

7-15 | When the number of patients with confirmed COVID-19 began to rise in March 2020, the Philippines quickly put in place strict community quarantine measures. As of July 2020, there has been no local transmission in the southern city of Marawi, showing how these measures appear to have contributed to containing COVID-19. However, they have also affected the livelihoods of the city’s residents, particularly displaced people living in and around Marawi.
