12-19 | In 2003, teams from Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) in Guinea started treating HIV patients with antiretrovirals by opening free HIV testing and treatment centres in Conakry. In 2003, Guinea was not an obvious choice of location to open an HIV/AIDS project. In contrast to countries in the epicentre of the pandemic, like those in Southern Africa, where up to one in four adults were living with HIV, just 1.7% of Guineans were HIV-positive.
12-11 | On December 8, the United Nations Security Council failed to adopt a resolution demanding a ceasefire in Gaza—blocked by a veto from the United States. The Security Council held an emergency meeting to discuss the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza. This followed a letter from the UN Secretary-General invoking Article 99 to call on the Security Council to prevent further escalation and end this crisis.
12-7 | Since the fragile truce in the Gaza Strip, the Occupied Palestinian Territories, collapsed on 1 December, aerial and ground attacks by Israeli forces have resulted in hundreds of people killed and injured. Two hospitals supported by Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) – Al-Aqsa in the Middle Area and Nasser in the south of the Strip – where MSF Palestinian and international staff are working and living, are barely able to cope with the influx of patients.
12-4 | Dr Husni Zainal, MSF Hong Kong president The world is aghast at unrelenting weeks of siege warfare and intense indiscriminate Israeli bombing that killed thousands of people and hit hospitals and medical facilities in Gaza. Our Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) colleagues who keep working in several hospitals in northern and southern Gaza and their families bear witness to the fact that there is no safe place today to survive the horrors of this conflict.
11-29 | On Monday 20 November, two missiles hit a hospital in Selydove, Donetsk region of Ukraine, where five Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) staff were present. Although no MSF staff were harmed, eight people inside the hospital were injured – including two Ministry of Health staff. Tragically, three people have been reported killed when part of the hospital collapsed from the missiles. MSF condemns this attack on a hospital, the second in a week, and once again calls for the protection of medical facilities.
